    2. Even though it is a post WW2 book, the themes that Bertrand Russell so vividly presents are still actual situations in modern society I d say the lenght of each chapter is ideal to get a brief understanding of the content, without tiring the reader with too much detail. The chapters entail an overview of the relations between Social Cohesion, Human Nature, Governments, The role of inidividuality and the evolution of technology. The book starts with Bertrand beautifully describing the distinciton b [...]

    3. Energy and the wish to be effective are beneficent if they can find the right outlet, and harmful if not like steam, which can either drive the train or burst the boiler Fantastic book, written by a fantastic man The ideas outlined by Russell are thought with a level of commonsense which might make you think oh wow, it really is that obvious However, based on the nature of current government and the individual s role in society, I believe it is actually Russell s brilliance which makes it come a [...]

    4. Excellent lectures about finding a balance between the initative of the individual and the role of government.I was surprised by Russell s idea of a world government being inevitable but needs to strike a balance between itself and national governments

    5. Bertrand Russell s writings are as prudent now as they were 100 years ago 100 years This is either a testament to his foresight or at how little we ve progressed as a species But the subject of this book authority versus personal freedom might be applicable for ages to come.Authority and the Individual is a collection of six lectures Russell gave over the BBC, collected here in one volume As such, the lack of footnotes ought to be forgiven This however doesn t prevent Authority and the Individua [...]

    6. A bit dated than other Russell books I ve read but a fair enough plea for finding the balance between anarchy and totalitarianism even if its probably too simple obvious Would make an excellent companion to Huxley s essay The Ultimate Revolution I would daresay that this book almost anticipates many arguments that New Left thinkers would expound beginning a decade later namely the idea that science and industry had been co opted by the governments of the US and Soviet Union and that the two way [...]

    7. What I Have Lived ForThree passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.

    8. One of the best books that reveals the relationship between the authority and the individual, from a political, social and economical perspective.

    9. There is so much wisdom compressed in this small text that it is impossible to summarize it into a review The titles of the chapters do not do justice to the practicality of the discussion undertaken in this book Although, at first glance, it may seem like a theoretical treatise, the book is neither mundane nor cryptic It is not one of those lectures that is embroiled in Utopian advice that puts its readers to sleep, instead it s a text that captures the essence of dilemma of an individual contr [...]

    10. It s a good book.I gave it four stars because it d have been better for the author to be specific Russell is a good writer and easy to understand.
